Women On A Mission: Dr. Kathy Magliato
As a female-led group of life-changers, Team Pardee stands behind the women in our city and across the globe that are striving to make the world a better place. One of these incredible women on a mission to help people live longer, healthier lives is Dr. Kathy Magliato.
Dr. Magliato, a Pacific Palisades resident, is one of the few female cardiothoracic surgeons in the world. She resides over Women’s Cardiac Services at Saint John’s Medical Center in Santa Monica, where she is developing a Multidisciplinary Women’s Health Center to address the cardiac needs of female patients.
As an expert in heart disease in women, Dr. Magliato is a major advocate for the advancement of treatment for cardiac disease in females. According to Magliato’s research, more than one in three female adults have some form of cardiovascular disease; since 1984, the number of CVD deaths for females has exceeded those for males. Heart disease is also a larger killer of women than all forms of cancer. In the US in 2008, all CVDs combined claimed the lives of 419,730 females while all forms of cancer combined killed 270,210 females.
In addition to her focus on female cardiac disease, Dr. Magliato is also developing a Ventricular Assist Device Program to treat end-stage heart failure patients. Magliato’s mantra ‘touching the human heart everyday’ transcends the hospital and operating room. She is also the author of the memoir, Healing Hearts – A Memoir of a Female Heart Surgeon,’ which is being turned into a television show called Heartbreaker – slated to air on NBC during the 2015-2016 season.
Dr. Magliato’s unrelenting work to advance cardiac disease treatments is something that truly inspires us to push for change in our community day after day. Know an inspiring Angeleno woman? Nominate her to be featured in our blog by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org
