Here’s the good news: Recent snowstorms in the Sierra Nevada have delivered an early holiday gift for drought-stricken California. The snowpack is now higher than average for this time of year. And what better way to celebrate than to embark on a series of temperature-dropping, kid-friendly events that are surprisingly close to home. Here are our top picks for chilling out during the holidays:
Kidspace Snow Days
Truckloads of real snow are brought into the Pasadena Kidspace Children’s Museum so little ones can frolic in the cold. Besides the angel making and snowman building, there’s also music, snacks and crafts.
North Pole Tubing Park
Open through January 3rd
Located at Mountain High ski resort, SoCal’s largest facility for snow tubing has up to ten lanes when fully open, two moving carpets and custom tubes.
Palm Springs Aerial Tramway
Palm Springs Aerial Tramway offers a stunningly beautiful ride to the snow-capped peak of Mount San Jacinto. From the top, there are lots of snow activities including sledding (it’s bring-your-own however). You can also rent cross-country skis and snowshoes for further explorations for the older kids.
The Queen Mary
Open until January 3rd
Head over the LA’s most impressive frozen playground, complete with ice sculptures, a skating rink, ice tubing and a sleigh ride. But take note: It is seriously cold inside Chill — as in well below 20 degrees. Dress accordingly!
Through Dec 31st
Here’s a cool concept: Skate and dine from a variety of great restaurants at the LA Kings Holiday Ice Rink. Price includes a prix fixe meal and time on the rink!
